Why RapidDone Polycarbonate CNC Machining

What Is Polycarbonate And Polycarbonate Machining?

According to the wiki, polycarbonates are useful material and are a group of thermoplastic polymers container carbonate groups in their chemical structures. This type of material has excellent optical clarity, high impact strength, and toughness.

Polycarbonate CNC machining, on the other hand, refers to the use of subtractive machining ways to remove material from block material. Among them, the CNC machining process is one of the most common ways.

Does Polycarbonate Block UV?

Yes, it is.

There is a natural UV filter for this material. Because of this, it turns to be a good alternative to the glass material. Also, that is why we can see this material is used in eyewear products and other similar products.

What Are The Advantages Of Polycarbonate As A Machined Material?

Compared to other plastic materials, polycarbonate material has a lot of competitive properties.

First, it has high load-bearing and good wear resistance. Because of such property, polycarbonate can withstand extreme temperatures. It also turns to be a highly machinable material during machining, especially for the CNC machining process.

Secondly, it is a high transparency material. Due to this property, it becomes the ideal material for making transparent parts such as lights cover, windows, eyeglasses, and so on.

Thirdly, it has good biologically inert. Therefore, polycarbonate can be used in electrical insulation applications widely.

Lastly, this material has the advantage of being in the mid-price range. Due to the price advantage, this material can be used in a variety of applications, covering almost the whole manufacturing industry.

How Does The Polycarbonate Machining Process Work?

This process essentially involves production by removing workpiece polycarbonate material into the required size and finishing.

The first step is cutting the polycarbonate block into shape by using a proper machining process. The typical machining processes include CNC milling, CNC turning, CNC routing, laser cutting. We can choose one or more processes based on the manufacturing requirement.

Once the polycarbonate is cut to size, we need to perform the surface treatments to the required cosmetic. There are many surface finishings for polycarbonate machined parts, but the most common one is polishing. As for the polishing, there are three different methods that are vapor polishing, buffing polishing, and manual polishing.

How Does The Polycarbonate Machining Process Work?

What Are The Polycarbonate Machined Part Applications?

Polycarbonate can be machined into a lot of custom parts. It includes car windows, car exterior parts, optical storage media, lenses, eyeglasses, automotive headlight lenses, display lights, sunglasses, drinking glasses, face shields, and more.

The applications cover a full range of different industries, including electronics, automotive, medical, optical, and more.

Can We Thread Polycarbonate?

Yes.

Because of its high load-bearing and good wear resistance, polycarbonate is a good material for threading with CNC machining way. For example, we can see that there is a lot of plastic thread screws are made from polycarbonate material.

Can We Make A Rapid Polycarbonate Prototype With  A CNC Machining Way?

Yes.

At RapidDone, we made a lot of prototypes with polycarbonate material in several ways including 3d printing, CNC plastic machining, and laser cutting. Among them, CNC machining is the most popular one, we use this way to build high-quality plastic components at a quick turnaround.

What Are The Best Feeds And Speeds For Polycarbonate Machining?

Similar to any other CNC machining process, we need to consider all parameters including material hardness, material size to define the best feeds and speeds. However, based on our more than 10 years of machining manufacturing experience, we suggest taking the below two steps.

  • Step1: Keep maximin rpm and maximin feed while your machine can hold accuracy.
  • Step2: Slow both feeds and speeds down slowly to get the best machining. As for the plunge rate, it depends on the tool types you are using. Normally, it varies from 20 to 120 IPM.

What Is The Best Coolant To Use For Polycarbonate Machining?

Coolant lubricant is always good for the CNC machining process because it can delete the chip and bring out heat. Here, we recommend two coolants when dealing with polycarbonate material.

The first one is the high-pressure air current.  This is a simple and basic method, it can remove most of the chips as well as heat.

Pure water, on the other hand, is another coolant way.  This method can do higher efficiency work than the air current method.  Therefore, you should choose such a method when you need to machine deep grooves.

How Do You Get Scratches Out Of Polycarbonate Machined Parts?

To get rid of the scratches from the polycarbonate surfaces, the ideal way is to use the polishing process. This process refers to three methods that include vapor polishing, buffing, and manual polishing.

√ Vapor Polishing

Vapor polishing is a chemical method that utilizes a solvent vapor to flow the machined surfaces. This highly flammable toxic reagent can melt all the outer microscopic layers.

In this way, the vapor can easily cover the whole surfaces of the part, including the outside surfaces and inside surfaces. Therefore, this method is ideal to polish polycarbonate components with complex features.

√ Polycarbonate Buffing

This is a mechanical process, it refers to utilizes a cotton polishing wheel spinning at a high speed to polish the surfaces.

In this way, the advantage is that we can polish large parts with simple outer surfaces at high efficiency. But the limitation is that the polishing effect is not as clear as vapor polishing.

√ Manual Polishing

The method is an ancient way, it utilizes almost no equipment and tooling, but depends on the experience of the workers.

In this way, sandpaper is the most important “tool”.  Normally, the worker uses big grit sandpaper at first, then changes to a smaller one until the polish job is done.

Compared with vapor and buffing polishing, this method requires more labor costs, but it is easier to get higher gloss surfaces for polycarbonate products.
